New Jersey’s First Offshore Wind Farm Receives Final Federal Approval
Offshore wind developer Fishermen's Energy of New Jersey LLC has gotten final federal approval to build six wind turbines off the coast of Atlantic City, N.J. The project will be the state's first offshore wind farm and the first of its kind in the nation. The project calls for the construction of a demonstration-scale wind farm 2.8 miles from the Atlantic City boardwalk producing up to 25 megawatts and powering about 10,000 homes.
The Army Corps of Engineers issued a CWA permit for the project after reviewing its effects on endangered species such as the piping plovers and sea turtles. Offshore construction is slated to begin in the spring of 2014, with turbines up and running by late that summer. The next steps in the project are to obtain approval from the Board of Public Utilities for the company's pricing plan to sell energy credits to the state's four electric distribution companies. The company is also seeking production tax credit and and investment tax credit for renewable electricity production.
